Diversity in Legal Field

Updated: May 3, 2021

According to data from the American Bar Association, we were able to analyze diversity trends spanning from 2010 to 2020. As you can see from the graphs below, the legal field has historically been a white and male dominated field.

As you can see in the above graph, the legal field remains a heavily White dominated industry. From 2010 - 2020, the percentage of White lawyers has remained 85% or higher. The amount of Black and Latino lawyers have both remained around 5%, while Asian has remained around 2%. Native American has remained at 1% or less, and multiracial data was not available until 2014 and has stayed lower than 2%. Overall, the lack of racial diversity improvement over the past 10 years is alarmingly low.

Similarly, you can see from the graph above that the legal field is heavily male dominated, though has more improvement compared to the racial data. In 2010, females made up 31% of the field and males made up 69%. In 2020, this has increased to 37% female and 63% male. Over 10 years, this is a small but promising increase in gender diversity that hopefully continues to grow.

Overall, the legal field is heavily dominated by white males and see's very slow improvement in diversity efforts.
