Diversity in High Tech

Updated: May 3, 2021

Facebook, Apple, and Google's racial and gender diversity data was examined and analyzed from 2014 to 2020 to better determine the improvement or lack thereof of the leading tech giants' diversity efforts.

Facebook

Over the past six years at Facebook, the gender disparity has remained relatively stagnant. According to Facebook's Diversity Report, in 2014 only 31% of the company's workforce were female, and 69% were male. In 2020, the company saw a gradual shift in its gender statistics as 37% of Facebook's employees were female and 63% were male.

In terms of racial diversity, Facebook experienced a significant turning point after 2019 when the number of Hispanic/Latinx employees (44.4%) exceeded the number of White employees (41%). From 2014 to 2018, Facebook was predominately White, but within the past two years from 2019 to 2020, Facebook has a new majority of Hispanic/Latinx employees.

Apple

Similar to Facebook, Apple's gender data has seen subtle and gradual shifts over the past six years. According to Apple's Diversity Report, there were 30% females and 70% males who worked for Apple in 2014. In 2020, there were 34% females and 66% males. Although there is an increase in female representation, the data does not reflect a significant shift.

According to the racial diversity statistics gathered from Apple's Diversity Report, Apple has maintained a predominately White workforce over the past six years. From 2015 to 2016, Apple's diversity efforts took a step backwards as the number of White employees increased from 54% to 56%. Apple has seen a gradual increase in Asian employees, with approximately 27% representing Apple in 2020.

Google

According to Google's Diversity Report, the company has seen very little change in its gender diversity efforts from 2014 to 2020. From the data, it is evident that Google is lacking in its effort to increase female representation within the company. From 2014 to 2020, female representation has only increased by 2%, whereas male representation has only decreased by 1%. These numbers are reflective of Google's historical and current lack of diversity efforts in terms of gender within the workforce.

When analyzing the racial diversity provided by Google's Diversity Report, it is evident that Google is working on increasing Asian representation and decreasing White representation within the company. In 2014, there were 31.5% Asian employees, and in 2020 there was a reported 41.9%. This 10% increase over the past six years shows a significant effort on Google's part to increase Asian representation. However, representation of Hispanic/Latinx, Native American, and Black employees has remained stagnant, which further explains Google's lack of diversity efforts towards those races.

After analyzing gender and racial diversity data across three different high tech companies, it is evident that more effort has been allocated towards increasing selective racial representations, and less on increasing female representation over the past six years.
